The latest Honest Trailer takes aim at Netflix’s The Sandman, poking fun at Tom Sturridge’s emo hero Morpheus even while praising the series.

A new Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies takes aim at The Sandman, mocking the Netflix show's very emo hero. Based on Neil Gaiman's acclaimed comic book series, The Sandman was released on Netflix at the beginning of August, earning mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. The fantasy series tells the story of Morpheus, the personification of dreams, as he attempts to restore order to his realm following 100 years of imprisonment. Despite strong viewership numbers and fan demand, Netflix has yet to renew The Sandman for season 2.

Tom Sturridge takes on the role of Morpheus, aka Dream of the Endless. Viewers have praised the actor's ethereal and yet cold portrayal of the ruler of the Dreaming. In addition to Sturridge,The Sandman also features performances from Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Vanesu Samunyai, Mason Alexander Park, and David Thewlis, among others. Throughout The Sandman season 1, Morpheus embarks on several quests, including attempting to reclaim lost possessions, preventing a Dream Vortex from destroying the Dreaming, and stopping The Corinthian (Holbrook), a rogue nightmare.

 Now, a new Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies pokes fun at The Sandman's self-seriousness and the severity of its hero, Morpheus. The hilarious video likens Dream to a "super goth Kevin Feige" and claims that many of his lines have a "sad-boy energy unseen since the golden age of Tumblr." The video also mocks several other aspects of the series, including Oswalt's performance as Matthew the Raven and the unique imagination battle between Morpheus and Lucifer. How The Sandman Show Stayed True To The Comics

The Sandman is largely a very faithful adaptation of Gaiman's source material, with the author himself serving as a co-creator of the show along with David S. Goyer, and Allen Heinberg. Although The Sandman is widely critically-acclaimed, some have cited the show's faithfulness to Gaiman's complex source material as a potential deterrent to new viewers, with the storylines, characters, and lofty themes potentially being difficult for the uninitiated to fully understand. Despite reservations from some critics, many fans of the comics have reveled in the accuracy of the show, with a number of scenes being directly recreated from the pages of The Sandman comics.

While viewership has been high, Gaiman has warned that a season 2 renewal for The Sandman is not yet a sure thing. In fact, part of the reason why Netflix may be hesitant to renew the series is indirectly because of its faithfulness to the comics. In order to do justice to Gaiman's source material and recreate some of the comics' striking imagery, The Sandman needs a very large budget, which means any renewal decision will be met with more intense scrutiny. Despite how easy it is to poke fun at Morpheus and other aspects of the series, it's telling that even The Sandman's Honest Trailer can't help but concede that the show is "actually pretty good."
