A surprising kissing rule from the CW series Riverdale has been revealed by star Lili Reinhart. The series which was created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is a gritty re-imagining of the classic Archie Comics characters that opened on a season involving the characters becoming embroiled in a murder mystery. It has now run for six full seasons and will be concluding with season 7 due next year. The cast includes Reinhart as Betty Cooper KJ Apa as Archie Andrews Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom and Casey Cott as Kevin Keller.
Since its premiere Riverdale has become known for its wild plot twists including some of the characters recently developing superpowers. This is in addition to a visit from Kiernan Shipkas Sabrina Spellman the lead of the canceled Netflix series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. In general the motto of the series seems to have been the bigger the better and the show has been happy to embrace the darker side of fictional teen life including murder bribery and drug addiction as well as the somewhat less relatable challenges presented by serial killers serpent-themed street gangs evil land barons and death cults.
Recently Reinhart appeared on the podcast Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz to discuss her new film Look Both Ways which recently dropped on Netflix as well as the end of Riverdale. While discussing the fact that she is excited to pursue more adult roles once Riverdale wraps its final season she revealed a surprising rule about kissing that was applied by The CW. According to Reinhart youre not even really allowed to kiss with tongue in the series which has been an odd limitation to work with for almost a decade. Read her full quote below
You can only be so much of an adult on a CW show because youre not even really allowed to kiss with tongue. That aspect of things [is] a little different.
There are likely going to be many fans who are surprised by this revelation considering how steamy Riverdale frequently gets. The series certainly isnt afraid of sexualizing its characters finding as many excuses as possible to get Archie actor KJ Apa shirtless onscreen. The show is full of mature themes including teen sexuality so its likely that the implied activities of the characters made their kisses seem more passionate than how they were actually portrayed onscreen.
While the rule feels limiting in some ways it certainly hasnt prevented Riverdale from taking as many over-the-top twists and turns as possible. Considering they only have one season left they will likely pull out all the stops and throw everything at the wall as they lead up to the series finale. Even if the kisses wont be steamier than a peck there are still plenty of ways to raise the stakes.
