Despite never revealing his identity Shoresy became one of Letterkennys most iconic characters but it was never made clear why Letterkenny never showed Shoresys face. With the mysterious character starring in his own Hulu spin-off series speculation over exactly what he looks like has never been more pertinent. Yet in many ways the fact that Shoresy always remained concealed only adds to his mystique.
Shoresy has been a regular presence throughout Letterkennys 10-season run running the gamut from comic relief to genuine antagonist. His foul-mouthed interjections are a prominent feature of the show as are his numerous acts of sabotage against opposing (and sometimes fellow) ice hockey players. As a result hes built up a notorious reputation explaining why the character is deemed worthy of his own eponymous Shoresy spin-off series.
While he is more of a side character than central protagonist Shoresy has a significant influence throughout the show. At first glance this makes it even more of a mystery as to why Letterkenny never showed Shoresys face. As it turns out there are some very good reasons behind the decision. For one thing the refusal to disclose his identity only helps add to the characters legend turning what could have been a stereotypical jock into a much more interesting presence. Additionally the use of deliberate obfuscation allows Letterkenny to employ effective recurring gags built around his hidden identity. However arguably the biggest reason why Letterkenny never showed Shoresys face is down to who plays the character.
Who plays Shoresy in Letterkenny?
In Letterkenny Shoresy is actually played by none other than creator writer and star Jared Keeso albeit in disguise. In order to play that part Keeso dons a wig while deliberately pitching his voice slightly higher in order to add an extra layer to the deception. In many ways the fact that the disguise isnt actually that elaborate only contributes to the comedy around the character in Letterkenny as the contrivances needed to keep his face hidden become increasingly obscure. In contrast Shoresy seeks to humanize the character by revealing him to be a more fully-rounded individual than was previously seen. By necessity showing his face in this context was unavoidable.
Further highlighting his comedy credentials Keeso continues to play the part in the Shoresy spin-off series. Set in a different location to Letterkenny to ensure that Keesos character never crosses paths with Wayne (the part he plays on the original show) Shoresy gave audiences their first proper look at the characters face making it a significant part of Letterkenny lore. However even though his identity has now been revealed theres no doubt that keeping Shoresy hidden for so long has helped to enhance the series.
